San Antonio’s expert in swallowing diagnostics and treatment, Longhorn Dysphagia Diagnostics utilizes a comprehensive, patient centered focus for both treatment and assessment that is evidence based.

What is FEES?

A fiberoptic/flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. (FEES) test is a procedure used to assess how well you swallow. A Speech Language Pathologist(SLP) passes a thin, flexible instrument through your nose back to your throat. Then the SLP views parts of your throat as you swallow with the camera on the end of the scope.

FEES has been shown to be safe and effective for swallowing evaluation. Multiple research articles have also repeatedly proven that FEES is just as accurate with even better sensitivity and specificity than a hospital videofluoroscopic swallow study (or MBSS).

How can FEES help your facility?

  • Increased patient safety

  • Reduce facility cost

  • Improve patient quality of life.

  • Decreased Length of stay

  • Better patient care

  • Fewer re-admits to the hospital

Signs A FEES might be Warranted:

  • Difficulty with swallowing during feeding/meals

  • Coughing/choking with food/drinks

  • The need to assess vocal fold function and the structures inside the throat.

  • Concerns associated with radiation exposure involved in other swallowing tests

  • Difficulty with swallowing saliva or secretions

  • Recurrent respiratory illness

Each year dysphagia affects 1 in 25 adults (Bhattacharyya, 2014) You are not alone it cuts across many age groups. It can be due to a stroke, brain injury, cancer, neurological disorder, COPD, tracheostomy and many other diagnoses. Sometimes the reason you are having swallowing difficulty is unclear and you need help figuring out why.

We can help by starting with a comprehensive clinical assessment. It’s possible that we would request further tests to better understand your swallow function and where the specific challenges are occurring.

Once we understand your specific needs, we can move forward with treatment. This may involve just a few sessions or intensive therapy sessions over the period of a few weeks.
